Preparing for Your Outdoor Family Photoshoot

The essence of an unposed lifestyle family photo shoot is to capture your family's story, preserving genuine emotions, love, tenderness, and happiness in your memories. I know that people feel camera-shy and awkward, finding it hard to relax and act naturally. I always guide families during photoshoots, helping them with poses and actions. The success of the photo shoot depends not only on the photographer but also on how well-prepared clients are. Below, I'll provide some tips to help you get ready for your outdoor family photoshoot.

Choosing the Location:

Pick a location that holds meaning for your family – whether it's a favorite park, a beach you frequently visit, your backyard, or a scenic spot by a nearby river. It should be a place you want to capture in photos and cherish. Other-way, it could be a scenic location that adds interest to your photos.

Timing:

The best time for outdoor photos is during sunrise or sunset. I usually schedule sessions in the evening, about one to two hours before sunset. This magical time, known as the golden hour, bathes everything in warm, soft, orange light.

Choosing Outfits:

  • What you wear is as crucial as the location for your photoshoot. Aim for outfits that complement each other rather than perfectly match.
  • Choose natural, textured fabrics like linen, cotton, knits…
  • Opt for primary natural colors: green, brown, beige, gray, cream, mustard… I suggest steering clear of black, which can be too dark for family pictures. You can choose dark colors like brown, green, or burgundy. Also, avoid pure white as it may glare in sunlight; instead, opt for softer cream tones.
  • Remember, during a lifestyle photoshoot, you'll be actively engaged: running, jumping, playing with kids, carrying them, etc. So, prioritize comfort in your clothing. Skip tight strapless dresses or snug short tops; go for oversized outfits that allow freedom of movement.
  • Layered clothing adds visual interest and looks great in photos, so consider bringing scarves, cardigans, jackets, etc. However, keep in mind that our focus is on capturing emotions and connections, not just outfits.

Accessories:

To create a narrative through your photos, think of a fun activity that everyone in the family will enjoy. Whether flying a kite, chasing butterflies with a net, or having a picnic, I'm open to your ideas and ready to provide props I have on hand (like a tent, kite, bubbles, etc.).

By following these tips, you'll be well-prepared for your outdoor family photoshoot, ensuring we capture beautiful, natural moments that reflect your family's unique bond. Feel free to reach out to schedule your session or ask any questions you may have.
